“SPOTLIGHT”

ELLA SPIES

Ella Spies has called Merrill home all her life and will celebrate her 96th birthday March 10 with a family dinner.  Ella was born in Washington Twp. and moved to Merrill when she was 8.  She married Leland Spies in 1935. They farmed just south of Merrill for 39 years and then moved to the home on 3rd Street that was her parents, Jens & Emilie Wedtstead Perersen, home.  Leland (Shorty) died in 1995 just a few days before they could celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary.

Ella graduated from Merrill High School and has served on the decoration committee for every Alumni reunion, creating beautiful tables.

Ella has been an active member of St. John Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday School for 25 years, serving as President of Lois Circle and always working at funeral lunches and church functions.

She has made 48 afghans for the Shriner’s Hospital in Minneapolis.  She has embroidered 157 tea towels for Floyd Valley Hospital and received a pin for 2500 hours of volunteer service.  She has also volunteered at the Ply. Co. Museum for 15 years.

At the Merrill quasicentennial, Ella had the honor of serving as Queen along with King Warren Hauff.

A personal note: Growing up, my family was neighbors with Ella & Shorty.  Ella’s birthday and mine were close.  She always sent me a card with a stick of gum enclosed.

Ella is very active and in good weather you will see her out for her daily walk. Happy Birthday Ella, and thank you for all you have contributed to the community

JUST A REMINDER---

If you have an emergency, call 911.  Merrill has an excellent volunteer ambulance crew.  Their response time is very good and they are here to serve you.

The ambulance is always looking for new members.  Consider volunteering.  Training is paid for.

Please check your house numbers to be sure they are highly visible from the street.  Minutes spent looking for a house number can be very critical in an emergency.
