COUNCIL NEWS

Nuisance properties were discussed again and updates on progress were given.

Proper forms have been submitted to DNR to proceed with lagoon improvements.  Council would like to have this ready to install as soon as possible next spring.

****************************************************                              “SPOTLIGHT”

                   WAYNE HAMILTON

When I asked Wayne to write about him, he didn’t think there was much to write about.  But he shared “Big Red’s Story” that he had written when he retired.  It was so fascinating I could not put it down and wish I could print all 33 pages for you.

Wayne was born southwest of Merrill.  His dad died when he was 2 ½.  The family moved to an acreage in the northwest part of Merrill where they had chickens & cows,  made butter & cottage cheese & had a huge garden.

As a boy, as soon as school was out, Wayne would move to camp with the Clark Bros. road gang, doing whatever job they gave him.  This is how he learned the grading profession and later started Hamilton Const. in 1946.

At the age of 19, Wayne was drafted into the army.  He shares some details of his almost 3 years in the army, but many are too hard to talk about.

Wayne married Esther Donlin Jan. 2, 1946.  They have 2 daughters: Marlene (Larry) Mckibben, & Val (Dan) Smith, 4 grandchildren, Peter & Philip Smith and Mark & Katie McKibben, 2 great-grandsons, Brant & Luke.

Wayne is a member of the Methodist Church, the American Legion, the LICA & a charter member of the Lion’s Club.

As a member of the Land Improvement Contractors of America, Wayne & Ester have traveled to Europe, N. Africa, Italy, S. America, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, Japan & China.

What an amazing story!  Thank you, Wayne.

 “SPOTLIGHT”

HELEN HENRICHS

Have you ever been cooped up in a small area with 15-20 elementary kids?  At least twice a day, five days a week?   It takes a special person and Helen is one of those people.  She was a school bus driver for 31 years.

Helen and husband Don have lived in the Merrill area for 36 years, coming from Sac County.  They have 3 daughters and 1 son.  Two daughters live locally, the other in Granger

Iowa and their son lives in Wisner, Nebraska

Helen has been a very active member of Assumption Catholic Church here in town and you will always see her helping at its functions.

Riding horses is a favorite pastime.  Helen and family has been a member of the Saddle Club for about 30 years.  Again, you will always see Helen working at the Club’s events.

When Helen can’t be outside gardening, you will probably find her with a book.  She is an avid reader.  Recently she agreed to become a Board Member of the Merrill Library.

Along with her interest in both vegetable and flower gardening, she has joined the Prairie Blooms Garden Club.

Helen is an excellent cook and loves to cook

Sometimes she even finds time to do some camping when riding horses.

Thanks for contributing so much to the community, Helen.
